Details
Ephemeroptera (mayflies) are an ancient lineage of insects. Aquatic nymphs are
the dominant life history stage. Adults have short lives ranging from a few hours to a few days.
All species are endemic to this archipelago and their distribution patterns seem
to be driven by landscape changes associated to Pleistocene glaciations. Leptophlebiidae
and Nesameletidae are the most specious families and they have been considered
in compiling this data set.
Localities given in New Zealand Map Grid projection metric coordinates were converted
to the WGS84 datum with the online utility provided by the Land Information New Zealand
government department (LINZ, http://www.linz.govt.nz/. Additional records
for Zephlebia pirongia were inferred from its dot map in Hitchings (2008a).
Random samples without replacement of thirty percent of records previously extracted for
Z. pirongia were assigned to its co generic homopatric species
{Z. dentata, Z. nebulosa, Z. inconspicua, Z. versicolor} (Hitchings 2008a).
